The Garden of Ridvan

church.family1Every year between April 20th and May 2nd, Baha’is around the world celebrate the Ridvan Festival, the happiest and most joyful holy days of the Baha’i year.  The Baha’is of the Gorge started our 1st Day of Ridvan celebration with a picnic, devotions and a wildflower walk at Catherine Creek, near Lyle, Washington.

In 1863, Baha’u’llah, the prophet/founder of the Baha’i Faith, was banished from Baghdad to Constantinople (Istanbul) because the government and clergy felt threatened by him.  He spent 12 days on Ridvan island in the Tigris River while preparations were being made for their winter sojourn. During that time he declared his God-given mission.

Baha’is also celebrate the 9th day, when his family joined him, and the12th day, when they left on their difficult journey.

The citizens of Baghdad were greatly saddened by his leaving and begged to go with him.  Although he couldn’t let them, he gave roses to all who came to say goodbye.

Ten years before, in 1853, the Persian government had feared the rapid spread of Baha’u’llah’s teachings so they banished him to Baghdad. His teachings continued to spread in Baghdad, which threatened the clerics there, so once again he was sent further into exile.

Baha’u’llah’s response was: “We desire but the good of the world and the happiness of the nations; yet they deem Us a stirrer up of strife and sedition worthy of bondage and banishment…. That all nations should become one in faith and all men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and differences of race be annulled — what harm is there in this?”

To our friends and family, Happy Ridvan!
