3. The Point in Competition
Have you ever watched highly competitive sports with your kids? Let’s talk about the kinds of messages our kids get from these games.
The best coaches, whether high school, college or professional, try to make it clear to the players that the point of competition is to bring out the best in us. It’s great to win, but for every winner there’s a loser, and sports isn’t about always being the winner. It’s about playing the game to the best of your ability.
However, sometimes the message that comes across from the media, when you watch highly competitive sports, is, “It’s not how you play the game, it’s whether or not you get a gold medal that counts.” Silver and Bronze medals will be considered, by some, as “first loser” and “second loser.” Totally lost is the dedication to playing at a personal best, the massive commitment to the individual sport (by the athlete as well as family and friends), regardless of the placement.
It is a concern when kids seem to have their whole identities tied up with whether or not they win. You want to applaud the rock-solid self-esteem of people like Kent Ferguson, who barely made it into the diving finals in the Olympics in Barcelona years ago. He said, “I’m just as good a guy if I didn’t make the finals as if I were in them.”
That’s the lesson our kids need to learn from competitive sports. It’s not if you win. It’s not even how you play. It is how you value yourself, what you do to help and inspire your teammates, and what you have learned when the game is over that really counts. ~ The Pacific Institute

6. Editorial: Preserve the Wasco School
We support the preservation of the historic Wasco School if negotiations with Sherman County, the owner, will provide all roof repairs, modify the heating system to allow separate uses of the two buildings, and correct other outstanding deficiencies while a group organizes, prepares a budget and begins fundraising. The County should hand it off with this work completed, a significant start-up fund and all evaluations, studies and recommendations the County authorized.
We understand that those who support this preservation effort will be engaging the help of professionals who can offer guidance about the historic preservation, funding, and sustainability. There is no reason to reinvent the historic wheel.
Comparisons with and information about similar situations in the county may be helpful: Rufus School/Community Center, Sherman County Historical Museum, Grass Valley Pavilion, and repurposed schools in Oregon and other states. Who supports these facilities? What does it take to keep them going?
The Wasco School Centennial guest book provides a solid support base for building a membership and funding. Our population of about 1,760 will need to step-up, and people who do not live here, who grew up here, who love the Wasco School or have ties to Wasco and the county, will be invited to participate with their support.
Volunteers will be necessary! Volunteers who are willing to ask for money or learn how to ask, and volunteers for vision, governance, marketing and management. Volunteers who will crunch the numbers, study the options, propose a budget five years out without county funding, and recruit members and other volunteers. We have volunteers who can do that.
We consider a reality check. We ask ourselves how we will support what we have and the Wasco School. Any new non-profit or organization joins our non-profits: ABC Huskies Day Care/Sherman County Child Care Foundation; Grass Valley Pavilion Renovation & Rejuvenation Project/City of Grass Valley; Little Wheats Day Care, Inc.; OSU Extension 4-H Programs; Pioneer Potlatch; Rufus Community Center; Sherman Booster Club; Sherman County Ambulance; Sherman County Athletic Foundation; Sherman County Cultural Coalition/Oregon Cultural Trust; Sherman County Fair; Sherman County Historical Society/Museum; Sherman County Junior Hoops; Sherman County Preschool; Sherman County Scholarship Association; Sherman Experiment Station Foundation; Wasco Cemetery Association; Wasco RR Depot & History Center/City of Wasco; Wasco Salmon/Steelhead Tournament … and our churches and the regional non-profits that serve us.
We join those who love the Wasco School in supporting its preservation and use well into the future!
