2. Robotics Sign Ups Begin as School Starts
The new school year brings a new crop of students just itching to get their hands on a robot! How do you help your student find their way to a ‘bot? One of the easiest and most common ways is to get involved with FIRST robotics. FIRST has a sports-like model where students meet as teams over several months to prepare for a competition. Which FIRST program you sign up for depends on the age of your student: Junior FIRST LEGO League (JFLL) is for ages 6 to 9, FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is for ages 9 to 14, FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is for ages 12 to 18, FIRST Robotics Challenge (FRC) is for ages 14 to 18.
Your first step? Contact your student’s school to ask if they have a team or check the list of past participating schools at gorgerobotics.org/get-involved to see if they might. Teams generally form soon after school starts to prepare for competitions in the winter. If your student’s school does not have a team, call Jessica Metta with the Gorge Tech Alliance (GTA) at 541-296-2266 to talk about resources to support forming a team. The GTA has free robots and laptops for loan and can point you towards training resources and mentors to support you in forming a team.
To learn more about robotics in the Gorge, visit gorgerobotics.org, a service of the Gorge Technology Alliance. The GTA’s equipment for loan and support of robotics events is made possible by our regional tech businesses including Google, Insitu and others. The GTA is a non-profit industry association that seeks to support, connect and develop the technology community of the Gorge. Learn more at crgta.org.
3. Don’t let down your guard on wildfires
Temperatures may have moderated somewhat but Governor Kate Brown and State Fire Marshal Jim Walker want you to remain vigilant in preventing wildfire and reporting arsonists.
The Oregon Department of Forestry has reported that since January 1, 2016, there have been 486 wildfires caused by humans with at least one due to arson. This is an increase over our ten-year average.
Fourteen fires that have broken out in central Oregon over the past few weeks are being investigated as arson, including the Withers Fire north of Paisley that has scorched more than 3,400 acres.
“Oregon continues to experience extremely dry conditions where any stray spark could spell disaster in any area of the state,” said State Fire Marshal Jim Walker.
“While you and your family are enjoying Oregon’s great outdoors, I encourage you to not only be fire safe but be alert to any suspicious behavior and report it to local law enforcement officials,” said Governor Kate Brown.
Tips can also be made by calling the Oregon State Police at 503-375-3555 or 911 in case of an emergency.
4. Cycle of Democracy
~ Alexander Tytler, Scottish philosopher
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising them the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.
The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:
from bondage to spiritual faith;
from spiritual faith to great courage;
from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance;
from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to apathy;
from apathy to dependence;
from dependence back again into bondage.
