I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. –Winston Churchill

~ See more at http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/

(GOLDENDALE, Wash., February 26, 2016) – When Maryhill Museum of Art opens for the season on March 15, 2016, visitors will be able to enjoy a special exhibition featuring large-scale paintings from the museum’s collection, an intimate show of American Art Pottery, and nearly 100 new objects in the Native American gallery.

A significant change at the museum in 2016 is the reinstallation of the George E. Muehleck, Jr. International Chess Sets Gallery, which has been relocated with new interpretation and better accessibility, giving visitors a fresh perspective on this popular exhibit. The museum’s chess set exhibition features 80 sets and numerous gaming pieces drawn from the museum’s extensive collection.

A Season-Opening Celebration on Saturday, March 19, 2016 will spotlight the museum’s collections with informal gallery talks highlighting new acquisitions, as well as behind-the-scenes tours of the collections storage rooms in the Brim Family Research Center. An evening reception for members will feature refreshments and live entertainment.

A Kaleidoscope of Color: American Indian Trade Blankets will open July 11, 2016 and explore commercially produced trade blankets as an important facet of Indian culture; the exhibit will showcase 20 pre-1925 blankets from well-known historic manufacturers such as J. Capps & Sons, Racine, Oregon City and Pendleton.

The museum also will mark the 100-year anniversary of the opening of the Historic Columbia River Highway in 2016, with special programs throughout the year and an extension of the photography exhibition Sam Hill and Columbia River Highway. Inspired by scenic roadways he had seen in Europe, Sam Hill was a key figure in the conceptualization of the Columbia River Highway and a major force in its completion.

Several student exhibitions will also be displayed in the museum’s M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center during 2016.
