 3. Decision America Tour, Rev. Franklin Graham to visit Oregon Capitol

Beginning next week, the Rev. Franklin Graham will begin a 50-state capitol tour of America calling on people to pray and vote. Rev. Graham says this election could be the most important in American history and is calling the tour the Decision America Tour. Graham also de-registered as a Republican and registered as an Independent voter as a show of neutrality. The first 13 states on the tour have been set with Oregon yet to be determined.

4. Congressman Greg Walden: First Amendment Rights

American flag2Our First Amendment rights, especially religious freedoms, have been threatened in recent years as taxpayers have been forced to foot the bill for abortion services regardless of whether that goes against their beliefs. Last week, a plan was signed into law to fund the federal government for the rest of this fiscal year. I wanted to update you on a number of provisions in the plan that take steps towards protecting life and defending religious freedoms in this country.

First and foremost, this bill prevents discrimination against healthcare providers who refuse to provide, pay for, or refer abortions. This might seem like common sense, but I believe this type of clear language is necessary to protect taxpayers. It also requires Obamacare health plans to disclose to customers if they provide abortions so that people don’t unknowingly purchase a health care plan that goes against their beliefs.

The bill also continues a ban on the use of federal funds to pay for abortions. This prohibition includes foreign assistance, which should be life-affirming, supporting the health of both women and unborn children. Funds are also prohibited from going to grant recipients that participate in coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization or engage in abortion-related litigation.

The plan bans gene editing of human embryos or the creation of embryos for research. In the past, the FDA has received applications for the approval of techniques to genetically manipulate human embryos in order to prevent disease. The desire to prevent illness and suffering is one we all share, but creating human embryos with manipulated genes raises concerns for the safety of the embryo being experimented on. The patient who would be affected, the unborn child, cannot give consent to these procedures.

I believe these are some common sense steps that will help protect life and religious liberties. Please know that I will continue to support these and other measures that prevent Washington from using your tax dollars to fund abortions. I will be sure to keep you updated as legislation comes before me in the House.

It is an honor to represent you in the U.S. Congress.

Best regards,

Greg Walden, U.S. Representative, Oregon’s Second District
